I truly enjoyed this action-packed and exciting story that also explores so much of the heart and mind of the protagonist, Jim Marron. William Kennedy is an author on the level of Clancy and Grisham in delivering an excellent narrative for readers to think about and enjoy to the fullest.
Written from the point of view of a present-day WWII veteran who returns to England, the book has a very authentic aura that captures the aged wisdom of the Greatest Generation. The protagonist is a hero turned family man whose advanced years give him new insight into his past and a rearranged set of priorities that we should all strive to adopt. It’s a book that truly has it all everything from seat-of-your-pants air combat missions that are superbly entertaining, realistic and suspenseful (the absolute best air combat I’ve ever read!), to deeper subjects like lost love, marriage, and the passage of time. The author tackled the generational gap between boomers and the Greatest Generation in a way that pinpointed their key differences without faulting either age group, and I loved how the characters from both groups grow to see the strengths of the other. I also really liked how the unsolved murder plotline gave the story just enough of a mystery feel to add a whole extra layer of suspense. It all came together quite well and I’d thoroughly recommend this book.
