In his fiction series "First World's End," Mark C. Angel has created a world where steampunk realism meets late cretaceous (antediluvian if you like) dinosaurs.

This first book "Rexrider," follows the adventures of Tamik as he struggles to find his calling. He learns that there is more to life than living for revenge. "Rexrider" is set In the fertile valley of Stonhaven Protectorate. Tamik is in training with his father to take over as the primary rider of their dinosaur mount, a predatory animal similar to but smaller than the T-rex. When his father is badly injured during a hunt in the wilderness, Tamik's increased duty to his father and his people, distract him from his personal problems with a member of the elite Order of Skywatchers, mystics who sometimes seem to be above common law.

A good editor could make this guy a best seller. Some phrasing changes here and there, a few word swaps, some paragraph restructuring, and wala, Hugo here he comes. The story was good enough to keep reading despite some rough patches, and it honestly left me looking forward to book 2. I am impressed with the author, which is NOT very common for me.

Rexrider First World End Book 1 eBook Mark Angel Shaheen Schmidt Chris Kemp Reviews

I loved this book! Are you kidding me, this needs to be a movie!! I just couldnt put it down, the concept is just awesome!
Ok, so I am not a critic, but I do read a lot. I have read just about everything, from Dumas's Count of Monte Cristo, to Angie Sage's Septimus Heap, and I feel the need to say that this book falls, if not in its own category, in the exact same as the others. Angel uses all sorts of vocabulary to fully immerse the reader in the life and adventures of Tamik. I almost felt the wounds during fight scenes, smiled to myself when Tamik conquers his challenges, and couldn't put the book down the entire time I was reading it. Normally I can always find a part of the plot that was confusing, or did not fit together, or even something simpler, but when reading this, it was just a straight shot. Everything flowed smoothly and fit together so there were no seemingly extraneous details. I completely and thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone of any age who likes fantasy, plot, detail, adventure, and just about any similar genre. A fantastically great read all around!
I love stories that take place in worlds that are built from scratch. This is why Rexrider is such an accomplishment. Undoubtedly many of you have probably heard of The Lord Of The Rings and other such stories that have completely immersive worlds. And although I wouldn't put Mark Angel's Rexrider novel up on that tall of a pedestal, I would say that this is extremely sound world-building that has serious meat within its pages.

The story is that of a civilization that existed alongside the dinosaurs. No, this is not Dinotopia or Christianity gone anti-science. Nor is it magical or stereotypical. The author builds up a human-alien society on Earth some 65 million years ago just before the devastating end of the age of the dinosaurs. They range in societal structure from those who actually ride smaller, domesticated Rexes (Rexriders) to Sky Watchers, Guardians (think swordsman), smugglers (messengers between outposts), dung collectors, vendors, and all manner of jobs required to run this complex world.

This story focuses on Tamik, a young Rexrider coming into his inheritance as the leader of his clan. The problem is that he's not too sure he wants to be a Rexrider, preferring instead to take on the mantle of a Guardian. But his father, Melok, will have nothing of the sort happen to his son.

But if you think this is a father/son-battle-of-the-wills-only story, think again. The story also delves into prehistoric animal characteristics and how humans might have interacted with these dangerous (and often lethal) creatures.

I would highly recommend picking up this book and checking out Mark Angel's incredible world.
I picked this book for a quick read, thinking it might be a decent distraction during my slivers of free time. Well, it took little time to get engrossed in the story, and I cursed when I read the last page. The story was over, and I was just not ready for that. The story is well written, the characters believable, and I was just sucked right into it.

This book was more enjoyable than I would have ever thought, and I will be back for more from this author. If you like sci-fi/fantasy stuff, then this book is a must read.
I loved the story. it is very well written. I could not find anything on-line about a sequel, so if anyone has information on it, please share. I would like to know when it is coming out so i can find out what happens next!!!
If you are a lover of fantasy, Rexrider, the first in a trilogy of novels by Mark C. Angel is exactly what you're looking for. If you like a healthy injection of dinosaurs in your fantasy, this book is Nirvana.

Set in a low-tech land where the civilizations have built and nurtured a kind of symbiotic relationship with many of the dinosaur species that wander their land, including the ferocious Rexes (people ride them!), Rexrider tells the coming of age story of a young, but reluctant Rexrider, Tamik, that over time, and played out against a number of exciting episodes, comes to face down and then accept his destiny.

Author Angel has a background in the animal sciences, and it shows. His descriptions of behavior of the reptiles is authentic and fascinating. There is much heroism, dazzling swordplay and plenty of action as we get transported to a fully realized, quasi-feudal society made up of any number of interesting characters who are affected in different ways as a great drought pits the domesticated rexes of Stonehaven and other Kiths against the savage wild rexes that threaten to destroy everything that civilzation has striven to build up.

This novel transports you into a fully realized world and immerses you there, pulling you forward at a breakneck pace until you realize you have turned the last page and are left wanting to know more about the wonderful world and characters that you have just visited.

Well, if rumor is true, and Mr. Angel indeed has a sequel under construction, he'll no doubt have a line of enthhusiastic readers banging on his door, demanding that he finish as soon as possible. A great read. Highly recommended.
